Greece: Nationwide strike expected to affect all forms of travel

Transport services, including flights, are expected to be severely disrupted in Greece on Wednesday, May 9, as trade unions stage a 24-hour nationwide strike. The strike will also affect banks, government offices and schools, while hospitals will operate on a skeleton staff. The strike was called by Greece's largest umbrella union, the General Confederation of Greek Labor, and the Union of Greek Civil Servants. Flag carrier Olympic Airlines has announced the cancellation of at least 50 domestic and international flights on Wednesday, but other airlines are not expected to be affected. In Athens, nearly all public transport will not operate Wednesday, while taxis will operate normally. Trains will have a very limited service Tuesday and Wednesday. Strikers plan to march Wednesday morning in central Athens, adding to the expected transport congestion in and around the city center. The strikers' demands include collective wage bargaining in banks and higher wages. Top
