04.05.2006 Italy: Railway workers to stage 24-hour strike starting 5 May
Italian railway workers were set to stage a 24-hour strike starting Friday
evening, railway company Trenitalia said.
Trenitalia said Thursday that minimum service would be guaranteed during the
walkout scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. (1900GMT), but it urged travelers to check
with train officials first before making travel plans.
The strike was called by unions demanding improved safety measures following
a string of accidents in recent months. The workers have been staging occasional
walkouts since January 2005, when two trains smashed head-on into each other,
killing 17 people.
Railway disruptions
Those planning to travel by train or subway in this region should check with
the railway immediately to reconfirm travel arrangements. If your train has
been canceled, request a reservation on the next available train, even if it's
on another line. Traffic on roadways near the train station may be considerably
more congested than normal. Stations are likely to become very crowded, lines
will be long and tempers among other passengers may be short. Allow a good measure
of extra time to get to the station and check in.
